Fresh Squeezed: Sweet Apple
Throughout my lifetime as a passionate music fan I have only found two men that I believe without a doubt that they can do no wrong. The first is Stephen Patrick Morrissey and the second is Joseph Donald Mascis. Sweet Apple is the latest side project from the vocalist and guitar virtuoso behind Dinosaur Jr. As the story goes, the band was born by accident and friendship - out of death, after a cross-country drive. Cleveland's singer-guitarist John Petkovic (Cobra Verde) had just lost his mother and felt he needed to drive for awhile while he tried to deal with the loss. He ended up in New England, at the home of long-time friends Dave Sweetapple (Witch) and J. Mascis, who told John to start writing some songs so they could start a band.
Within weeks, and after recruiting fellow Cobra Verde guitarist Tim Parnin they started working on an album. The album these four veterans have created is called Love and depression and will be released on New Yorks's Tee Pee Records on March 30, 2010. So essentially the band was formed to help John come to terms with life and death, but the product is an exciting new supergroup. In J likes to tell people he saved John's life by forming the band, and that just may be the case.
The first track that they have released is called "Do You Remember" (mp3) and has a much more classic rock feel than your typical Dinosaur Jr. track, but still rocks nonetheless. The also plans to make a video for this track and perform at SXSW in March.
